Court Interpreting
Think of interpreting in a legal context; mainly in courts, tribunals, justice houses, and police services. Legal knowledge, both of the Belgian legal system and the country where the foreign language is spoken, is essential.

Social Interpreting
A social interpreter in Belgium is tasked with translating a spoken message from one language to another. This provides a non-native speaker with access to information they are entitled to. This might happen in a municipal office, hospital, social facility, or school. Interpretation can take place in the presence of the persons involved or through various communication methods.

Simultaneous Interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting (listening and translating at the same time) for one to two listeners can occur when the interpreter whispers the translation into the ear of the person seated next to or in front of them. For a larger audience, a translation system is required. Often, interpreting booths or whispering sets are used. The interpreters are in separate booths for each language, hear the speaker through headphones, and speak the translation into a microphone. Attendees in the room can select their desired translation via a switch. The translation is available with only a few seconds’ delay and flows as smoothly as the original speech. Simultaneous interpreting requires great concentration, perfect language skills, and broad general knowledge.

Consecutive Interpreting
In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter speaks only after the speaker has finished, often based on a few notes. In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter stands (or sits) live next to the speaker and translates sentence by sentence, in passages, or summarizing. This usually happens in a three-party relationship, but can also be for an audience (unlike simultaneous interpreting). We use consecutive interpreting during assignments such as doctor’s visits, school meetings, meetings with lawyers and notaries, etc.

Conference Interpreting
The conference interpreter is one of the most publicly visible categories within the interpreting sector. The interpreters translate conversations at meetings from a foreign language to their mother tongue.

Wiretap Interpreting
The wiretap interpreter translates wiretapped telephone, Facebook, and Skype conversations for police and judicial services. There is no interaction between the interpreter and the speaker in this case. The interpreter listens to the intercepted conversations and interprets them (interpreting part of the job) while typing the translation into Dutch (translation part of the job).

Transcription
The transcription service can best be described as converting or transferring audio recordings into written text. In this case, an interpreter is called a transcriber. A transcriber ensures that an audio recording is transcribed into a text processor. These could be film clips or audio passages.

Football Interpreting

Video Interpreting
